How We Work

The McEvoy

Method

McEvoy Racing have won in every state of Australia, the aim is to get the best from every horse.
Ownership
McEvoy
Ownership Method

At McEvoy Racing, you’re part of the story from day one, not just an investor watching from a distance. Transparency and communication guide everything we do, and as a member of the stable family, you’ll get regular PRISM updates, event access and every privilege of ownership – you could even make lifelong friends.

It starts at the sales, where Tony and Calvin search every major venue across Australia and New Zealand for top-level talent at every price point. Superior stayer, classy colt or fabulous filly whatever suits your budget, we’ll find your horse and welcome you into the thrill of racing.

Communication and PRISM
Ownership communication is managed through PRISM, your personal ownership portal. Receive regular updates on your horse in training, delivered via personalised video and audio clips direct from Tony, Calvin, and the stable team.
Race Day Experience
The best seats in the house. Watch your horse compete in the mounting yard, get up close with Australia's leading jockeys and owners, and see your name or syndicate's name in the racebook.
Stable Open Days
Exclusive invitations to visit our stables. Meet the team, see your horse up close and gain an insider view of the daily routine. You are always welcome to come and watch your horse work.
Owner Events
Regular owner gatherings, ladies' days and celebratory evenings. Connect with fellow owners, hear directly from Tony and Calvin and be part of something that extends well beyond the racetrack.
Training
McEvoy
Training Method

McEvoy Mitchell was established in 2010 and has since grown into one of Australia’s most respected training operations. In 2019, Tony and his son Calvin joined forces, and by 2021 had opened a state-of-the-art training centre at Ballarat. Most recently, the team has expanded again with the addition of a new yard at Flemington Racecourse, cementing their presence at the heart of Australian racing.

Together, Tony and Calvin combine tradition and innovation, experience and ambition offering every horse in their care the best possible opportunity to succeed.

Our lifetime of experience
With a lifetime of knowledge between them, Tony and Calvin have built something rare: a good team, a network of owners, and facilities that give every horse the best of all worlds. Metro track access at Flemington. Beach access at Altona. A country setting at Ballarat. Wherever a horse is at in its journey, we have the right environment for it.
Our Owners
A good owner is a horse and racing team's greatest asset. They're invested not just in winning, but in the horse itself - its health, its happiness, its longevity. They trust the team, ask the right questions and understand that the best results come from doing things properly, not quickly.
Our Team
They say happy horses win races. From 4 am, our team is already there - checking legs, feed, water and the small things that matter most. It's that attention to detail, every single day, that keeps our horses happy and winning. It's important to Tony and Calvin that every horse is surrounded by the right people - a team who cares as much as they do.
Our Methods
It's the 1% details that make the difference. From the team and facilities to the owners we work with, we're meticulous in every area: nutrition, recovery, relaxation, the best vet care, physios and trusted bloodstock agents to select the right horses from the start. Nothing is left to chance.
Yearling Selection
McEvoy Yearling
Selection Method

Tony and Calvin go to each and every sale in Australasia and monitor the online sales to source the best athlete to suite everyone budget.

Whether it be multiple Group 1 winners like Hey Doc, Sunlight or Veight who McEvoy Mitchell Racing and partners purchased at the yearling sales, or Half Yours – the 2025 Cups King – purchased online, our method is simple: buy on type and buy an athlete.

catalogue research
Each sale catalogue takes weeks of research to ensure that when we arrive at a vendor's farm or inspection at the sales we've done our homework: how many foals has the mare had, by which stallion and how is he performing, progeny research and who are they in training with - as Colin Hayes would say: fail to prepare, prepare to fail.
inspections
Here is where we analyse their physique and temperament - do they respond to their handler well, are they coping with large inspection groups and will this thoroughbred suit our training methodology and facilities?
Sale day!
Catalogue research and inspections are complete, now is where the real work happens. Along with Damon Gabbedy of Belmont Bloodstock (FBAA), we set our budget and compete against owners, breeders looking to improve their portfolios and other trainers. It's important to get on the right leg when bidding with the auctioneering taking buyers up in different increments.
Post sale
Our McEvoy yearlings will head to the paddock following each sale for a well-deserved spell following their approximate eight-week sales preparation. Here they have downtime before they head into the next phase in their careers: race education.
Where The Method Lives
